• A career realignment to enable purposeful climate action

  

  As Head of Communications for Woodknowledge Wales I have put into action my growing interest in climate justice. Working closely with cross-sector, multi-disciplinary experts, we engage timber and construction industry stakeholders in a collaborative effort to build economically-viable regenerative solutions towards the transformation of Wales into a high-value forest nation.

• An MRes Media and Journalism

  I am undertaking a P/T cross-disciplinary creative practice Masters at Bangor University. This focuses on the engagement and inclusion of diverse voices in climate discussions, in particular on how to overcome the challenges around engaging the public and younger generations in complex climate solutions discussions such as land use for tree planting in Wales.

• Content workflows, quality and risk mitigation

  

  As Senior Technical Editor and Writer for BM Trada, I delivered peer reviewed publications focused on timber, certification, and the built environment. Working for a specialist in compliance and qualification testing services, quality and risk management of content was a crucial factor in this role.

• Design and implementation of an Agile publication methodology

  I developed and applied an Agile publication methodology. Designed to minimise dependencies on internal technical expert authors and reviewers, the flexibility and modular-delivery also improves productivity and timelines.

  I spent my lockdown as Editor of Laboratory News magazine and website. Firmly established as the independent source of news analysis, comment and detailed technical articles for scientists: https://www.labnews.co.uk

• Print, web and digital magazine publishing

  As Editor for Lab News I conceived, commissioned and produced the print magazine, website, and social media promotional material. I researched and sourced trends, wrote stories and sourced and commissioned expert inputs. I produced specialist digital publications focused on high value topics and worked with advertising sales to ensure commercial viability.

• Set up, management and delivery of a print magazine

  

  I worked with Future Publishing to set up the science magazine, Breakthrough, on behalf of the UK Science Park Association. When this project was then handed back to the client, I continued to work directly for UKSPA as the magazine’s editor and communications manager.

• Contract publishing and remote project management

  I flatplanned the publication and commissioned inputs from the member network. I wrote, edited and produced content in partnership with a remote contract design and advertising team. I was also responsible for sourcing a contract publisher and ensuring advertising income covered the layout, print and distribution costs.

• Reference book author and editor

  

  As well as editing technical publications for BM Trada, I also authored three industry books published by Horn Publishing and freely available online at: http://hornonline.com/lifesciences/

• Expert interviewer

  I am an expert interviewer with experience in face-to-face and remote interviews with people at all levels. My organisational skills help ensure I get the most from my interviewees.

• Science and technology writer: agency trained, freelance honed

  

  Having developed my craft in a fast-paced science-led agency, I turned to freelancing. As a result I honed my ability to think strategically as well as client facing and business skills.

• Industry awards and a media scholarship

  I am proud to have won industry awards for both an HSE campaign and a social engagement campaign for young apprentices, as well as having benefited from a United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) media scholarship.

• Industry and academic contracts

  

  As a freelancer, I worked several longer term and retainer contracts. These stretched my knowledge and exposed me to many different ways of working.

• Campaigns, press relations and on-demand copy

  Contract work has included delivering on-demand copy for an estate agency application in an Agile war room, press relations and communications for the European Commission’s Graphene Flagship, and several long-running campaigns for SaaS and other products.

• Copywriting, client relations, pitching, and social media

  

  While working for Kapler Communications, I learned to write. I delivered press releases, white papers, thought leadership features, ebooks, applications notes, conference posters, presentations, infographics and social posts.

• Technical frontrunner

  While at Kapler Communications, I sold in the concept of B2B social media campaigning to both staff and clients.

• Web development and content management

  Hired by Intervet UK as a PA in my early career, I took responsibility for the company’s first intranet. Gaining full web development certification, I was promoted and became the UK representative in the creative project to develop the global internet site. I went on to build my first business creating product websites.

• Software and coding

  I am a technically savvy content specialist who works as well in code as she does with the written word. I am comfortable working directly with HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. I understand SEO, PPC and analytics and have experience with most Content Management Systems.

• Mathematics, statistics and data

  With a first class Honours degree in mathematics and physics, I both understand and can develop algorithms. Data analysis and the conversion of data in to visuals comes as a natural skill – one which I love to explore.

• Interactive story-telling

  I am well read in the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence. I am also becoming more involved in interactive content. I am currently self-learning Python, Tableau, interactive story development and video tools and did sell-in an interactive data-led content campaign to a client.

• AI-assisted storytelling

  I’ve recently led projects using AI-assisted storytelling, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) tools, and mobile-led filming techniques to produce rich media that shifts perceptions of forestry and low-carbon construction.
